Eat or not to eat…what diet is the answer?

Why LOW CALORIE DIETS DONT WORK.

A BIG SHOUT out to all the LOW CALORIE JANUARY DIET CREW

Lets start by saying GOOD FOR YOU- you have taken a step motivated by a drive for better health. However lets talk about whether or not you are going about this in the ‘best way’ for you.

It may be worth reading this.

Do you know what your BMR is?

Basal Metabolic Rate is the amount of energy your body needs to keep YOU FUNCTIONING at rest. So without any movement whatsoever. Think about things like breathing, cell growth, tissue repair, nerve function, muscle contraction, brain function. These are all ‘pretty important things’. So ‘in any diet’ we need to make sure we are eating at least at a level of Calories that matches our ‘BMR’ – If we want our bodies to function well.

If we don’t eat at this level then we may start to feel weak, tired, cold. We may get ‘brain fog’. We will get muscle wastage. Our skin will appear dull. We may not be able to exercise as well as we could due to lack of energy. In summary bad stuff happens inside.

We may start to feel like our diet makes us ‘feel like sh**t.

This is a big factor why Low Calorie Diets do not work long term. They are unsustainable. They cannot last without damaging the ‘things in our bodies’ that make them function.

Your basal metabolic rate accounts for about 60 to 75% of the calories you burn every day. It is different from person to person- and can be increased by developing:

LEAN MUSCLE MASS

It WILL NOT BE increased by

LOW CALORIE DIETS

This should be a massive positive for everyone currently starving themselves in the hope of losing weight. This is a sign to STOP and EAT MORE. Eating closer to your BMR but making ‘other changes’ will be a better plan. I promise you.

So if LOW CALORIE DIETS ARE NOT THE ANSWER- WHAT IS?

-Making better food choices- EATING REAL FOOD- if you eat unprocessed food it is much more difficult (I’m not saying impossible) to overeat. Hormones controlling hunger become balanced. There is a notable difference to your ‘satiety’.

-This is particularly important if you look at the role of FIBRE in your diets. FIBRE, most easily comes from vegetables – (NB for all of you juice lovers out there-the fibre is very much decreased when you juice- hence EATING your food is a much better course of action than juicing -this is why I don’t juice). You will feel FULL. FIBRE makes you feel full. Your BODY will be happy and will function. Vegetables are LOW in Calorie so you will not gain weight.

-RESISTANCE Training- Adding resistance work to your exercise plan is the easiest way to develop muscle. Eating enough protein to support muscle growth is also part of this.

-Ditching any ‘Diet’ that you cannot sustainably keep up for life. If you are following a ‘diet’ just to get you started’, take it from me this is not the answer. Low Calorie diets predominantly lead to water loss and muscle loss . At the end -yes the scales may tell you good news. But what happens when you want to ‘live a normal life again’……the weight piles on…your metabolism has probably slowed even further. Well I can then lead you to the £Million diets companies who have ALOT of REPEAT custom. If they worked they would be sadly out of business…….
